Makeup for Flamenco Luxembourg A.s.b.l.

Hi there! Today I’m introducing a look I created in the beginning of March for the annual Flamenco Festival in Esch which took place last month. I was asked to do the makeup for the girls of the Flamenco association I dance for, Flamenco Luxembourg Asbl.

In order to have an idea and a common look for all the girls, we sat one Sunday afternoon with Jil, the flamenco teacher and owner of Flamenco Luxembourg Asbl and Zuzana, her right arm to create together  two looks to match all the girls.

Whenever I think about a “typical” flamenco look, the image that comes to my mind is a red lip with black liner. And when I think of these two elements, I think of French actress Leïla Bekhti. As a matter of fact, red lips and black kohl line are her signature look. I decided to choose this look as a starting point for Jil, who has Mediterranean features. However I decided to create two different looks to go with dark features and light features since Zuzana is from Slovakia.

By the time we had the show, I changed the shade of the lips because it wouldn’t match the dress color we wore at the Festival. I chose in the end the Sephora Cream Lipstick #10 which is a burgundy, wine-like color.

You can watch the photos of our big day on Flamenco Luxembourg Asbl’s Facebook page. Some girls did their makeup themselves and used of course their own products, so you might not see any match with what I am presenting here.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank again Flamenco Luxembourg Asbl for giving this chance and also the girls of their patience that day!

I hope you enjoy it!

Starting with Zuzana…

The eyeshadows which, in my opinion, compliment her blue eye color are taupe/mauve shades. With this in mind, I created a soft smoky eye. Since the lips were very catchy, I kept the eyes soft by smoking out the black. I applied a black eyeshadow to the roots of the lashes and blended it upwards. Finally I took a black khôl pencil which I applied on an angled brush to intensify the lash root.

Since she has a naturally beautiful skin, I didn’t apply layers of products. Once I had unified the skin tone with the foundation, I applied a little of Benefit’s Hoola bronzer to sculpt her face.

And now Jil!

Jil might be the only person I know how has symmetrical eyebrows. They say eyebrows are cousins, but hers are twins! lol And she has, with my sister-in-law, the longest lashes I have ever seen. It’s incredible, lucky them!

With her hazel-brown eyes, the eyeshadows I selected for her were neutral ones and of course I smoked a little black in the outer corner of the eyes to add a little intensity to the look.

As for the skin, I used Nars Deep Throat blush to sculpt her face and MAC Whisper of Guilt highlighter which is one of my favorite highlighters. It was very funny seeing her reaction when she watched herself in the mirror 🙂

You might think it is not intense enough, that I should have applied more black on the eyes and that I should have done a more stronger contour, but I did not want to disguise the girls for that day. My point was (and always is) to enhance the natural features. Plus, Jil has many books about flamenco with photos of flamenco dancers and having a look at it, I realized that most of the time, they wore a very light makeup. Sometimes they didn’t have eyeliner nor red lips. I have come to the conclusion that a lot of what we think about flamenco or the image we have, is sometimes based on clichés….
